padre padrone
a very good film and a very good criticism of patriarchy by tavini brothers. won palm d'or in 1977.
made me think of several things:
1- italian cinema is one of my favorite national cinemas.
2- how come the films that turkish directors make in the 70s,80s are so dated and locally specific while the films italian directors make in the 70s and 80s are not dated and extend beyond their locality even though they also tell the stories of vendetta, village life, patriarchal, feudal system? (padre padrone, or olmi's films). is it because of them being european and hence easily marketable or turkish films lacking important elements that make a film not bounded to place and time?
3- italian kids are really very cute.

weekend
i had a great weekend in burlington, vermont. ate lots of great food, drank lots of alcohol and visited ben& jerry's factory. and had the taste of this great beer "mother lager" that stunned me with its design and taste. unfortunately it's going to be discontinued (magic hat is discontinuing the only good beer they ever produced) but i got my 6-pack and my t-shirt with the design.

rio is a very fascinating city, almost the epitome of the city of late capitalism. this documentary was about anderson sa, who founded the afroreggae movement against the organized crime and violence that sucks in the inhabitants of the favelas. it was a very good documentary, poetic in its imagery and very informative but rather than depicting the afroreggaee movement in its relation to the rest of the population, i felt it focused too much on anderson, who by the way is a great person.

zodiac
david fincher shows he is a genius. how can a director change styles and genres so easily and nevertheless make great films? after seven he is again directing a film about serial killer but with a completely different mood and themes. i loved this film (and also its soundtrack). i agree with the village voice review that the film is about information age, communication and media. it was very clever.
